A quandary resolved
COLUMBIA, 3/13/17 (Restaurant review) -- It's Sunday after church or Sunday School or just that lazy day before the work week ignites and you head out to your favorite brunch destination -- Cafe Berlin -- only to find a line nearly out the door.
What's a hungry person, couple, family, or group of friends to do?
My wife and I faced this quandary a few weeks ago. Fortunately, the answer was as simple as walking across the street to The Wolf's Head Tavern, which served a delicious brunch without the wait.
Seated immediately, I ordered coffee and we both ordered food.
My wife had the pulled pork hash, a surprisingly luscious offering of pulled pork over toasted sourdough, eggs over-easy, and spicy sour cream.
I had the Slinger, kind of a gourmet Stretch, the college-crowd favorite at Broadway Diner. Eggs, chili, gravy, and cheese topped roasted potatoes and delivered a morning zing that's sadly lacking in the standby hash browns many restaurants serve the breakfast crowd.
Other Wolf's Head Sunday brunch offerings include a tantalizing-sounding Captain Crunch encrusted French Toast; breakfast burrito with carmelized onions and Provel cheese; corn beef sandwich on house sourdough with cheddar; and home-made buttermilk biscuits and sausage gravy.
Wolf's Head also serves breakfast libations, including mimosas and their "famous" Bloody Mary. The service was fast and on-point, and the bill reasonable -- about $23.00 (brunch menu items range from $7-10).
Online reviews are mostly positive. Google diners rate Wolf's Head 4.3/5.0, with periodic flagging for slow or poor service. Here's what some Google reviewers had to say:
My wife and I came in for brunch and enjoyed every minute of it! The food was delicious...and my wife absolutely loved the Captain Crunch French Toast. -- Joshua Giliberto
If you're in Como.... this is where you come for great food, atmosphere and ample bar selection. Definitely our favorite spot and will be back for years to come. Bottomless mimosas, beer and a shot for 5 bucks, and the Slinger is incredible! Kudos! -- Brandon White
