COLUMBIA, 8/19/11 (Beat Byte) -- A 4th-generation Marine and graduate of
Moberly Area Community College in Columbia is heading to that other Columbia -- Columbia University in New York City.
Missouri resident Kyle Lichtenberger (
center) will enroll at Columbia this fall, after a 4-year stint in the Corps, following three previous generations. All Marines, his great-grandfather served during World War I; his grandfather served during the Korean War; and his uncle served during the Vietnam War.
Joining the Marines and attending community college were smart financial moves. The Post-9/11 GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon Program will pay more than $17,500 per academic year.
"It was something I wanted to do and it just kind of worked out for me," Lichtenberger (right) told the DVI News, a defense department newsletter. "I wanted to go back to school, but I didn’t want to put that financial burden on my parents."
On Marine Corps deployments, Lichtenberger provided disaster relief in Haiti after the earthquake and worked throughout the Middle East.
"I took a lot of good things away from [the Marine Corps]," he said. "I enjoyed it, and I did my time honorably."
Congratulations Kyle! Thank you for your service and good luck on your future endeavors.
