COLUMBIA, 7/23/12 (Beat Byte) -- One of the nation's top film and movie business magazines has named a Columbia filmmaker to a prestigious annual list.

Kim Sherman is one of Filmmaker Magazine's 25 New Faces of Independent Film for 2012. Now in its 15th year, the list honors "the creative achievements and career potential of today's emerging filmmakers."

The magazine's editors say they try to avoid honoring the already over-celebrated, making the list after "rigorously watching films, rough cuts and reading scripts, all in the hopes of coming up with a snapshot of the current independent scene that is well-considered, sometimes idiosyncratic, and hopefully always fun to read....It's downright inspiring to profile filmmakers whose pro-activity knows no bounds."

A Wyoming native, Sherman has lived in Columbia for 16 years, working in a local film scene that includes Ragtag Theatre and Arable Entertainment.

Citing production credits that include "Amy Seimetz’s excellent, heat-blasted psychological noir Sun Don’t Shine and Adam Wingard’s inventive home-invasion horror pic You’re Next," Filmmaker Magazine  said Sherman "credits her home base of Columbia, Mo., for her ability to produce independent film.

"I depend on the community here in ways I wouldn’t be able to if I lived in a place with a strong [film] industry," she told the magazine. "In New York and Los Angeles, people are so used to filming; they almost protect themselves from the films coming in. But in Columbia, people are excited. We get support from unusual sources, and from people who are interested in not just filmmaking but supporting the arts."
